Join us for a night hike through the dunes of the Crane Wildlife Refuge. Meet us at a campfire on the beach to get oriented to our surroundings before hiking into the full moon along the beach and finally ducking into the dune trails. Transformed and illuminated by the glow of the full moon, the dunes are an eerily beautiful landscape, creating an experience you will never forget.

November’s Full Beaver Moon, also called the Frosty Moon, heralds the coming winter, and serves as a warning that ponds and swamps will soon freeze. Beavers are particularly active around this moon, storing food and making repairs to their lodge. Native American tribes knew this moon appeared when it was time to set beaver traps to ensure a supply of warm winter furs

Bring water and dress for the weather to maximize comfort. You are welcome to bring a flashlight or headlamp, but we may ask for moments of total darkness to fully enjoy the moon and the shadows it makes on the dunes. Please note: We will be hiking up and down dunes, through soft sand (which makes for a more strenuous hike), for approximately 3-3½ miles.

The starting location and other relevant details for all hikes, kayak paddles, and river boat trips will be emailed to registrants the day before the event at the address provided upon registration. If you prefer to have this information over the phone, please call us using the contact information provided at the left.

Weather cancellation policy: All trips will take place rain or shine with the following exceptions: If there is a high confidence that thunder and lightning will be present, we may cancel a trip up to one hour in advance. If the forecast is for steady and heavy rain all day, we may decide to cancel by 3pm on the day before the event. If either of these happens, all registrants will be notified by email and/or phone with as much notice as possible.
