Wide-open coastal sites are the location of choice for wintering Snowy Owls, whose common perches are dunes and salt hay staddles. In winters past, the owls have been frequent visitors to the Crane Wildlife Refuge and this year is no different - we have counted at least 3 indivuduals who are wintering in the area. Join us as we hike the dunes in search of these magnificent birds. Unlike most owls, snowy owls are diurnal—they hunt and are active both day and night – so we have a good chance of sighting one even in the daylight hours! This hike will give us a great chance of seeing snowy owls, and then let us take in a spectacular sunset on the beach.

Please note: We will be hiking up and down dunes, through soft sand (which makes for a more strenuous hike), for approximately 2½ -3 miles. Dress for the weather to maximize comfort and minimize misery! Because we will be looking for Snowy Owls, sometimes on distant dunes, please bring binoculars if you have them. We will have a few available for use. Water is always good to have along. This hike is for ages 13 and up.

Weather cancellation policy: All trips will take place rain or shine with the following exceptions: If there is a high confidence that heavy steady rain and/or of thunder and lightning will be present, we will make the decision to cancel the program no later than 3pm the day before. If the program is cancelled all registrants will be notified by email and phone with as much notice as possible.
