Wide-open coastal sites are the location of choice for wintering Snowy Owls, whose common perches are dunes and salt hay staddles. In winters past, the owls have been frequent visitors to the Crane Wildlife Refuge and this year is no different - we have counted at least 3 indivuduals who are wintering in the area. Join us as we hike the dunes in search of these magnificent birds. Unlike most owls, snowy owls are diurnal—they hunt and are active both day and night – so we have a good chance of sighting one even in the daylight hours!

Please note: We will be hiking up and down dunes, through soft sand (which makes for a more strenuous hike), for approximately 3-3½ miles. Dress for the weather to maximize comfort and minimize misery! Water is always good to have along. Because we will be looking for Snowy Owls, sometimes on distant dunes, please bring binoculars if you have them. We will have a few pairs available for use. This hike is for ages 10 and up (babies in backpacks are welcome). Children 14 and under qualify for the children''s price.

Weather cancellation policy: All trips will take place rain or shine with the following exceptions: If there is a high confidence that thunder and lightning will be present, we may cancel a trip up to one hour in advance. If the forecast is for steady and heavy rain all day, we may decide to cancel by 3pm on the day before the event. If either of these happens, all registrants will be notified by email and/or phone with as much notice as possible.
